Job Description

General Definition

This is lead law enforcement work which involves direction of specific sections of the sheriff's office. A position in this class performs the functions of an advanced, full-performance level, deputy sheriff as well as supervisory duties. A position in this class is differentiated from those in related classes by the incumbent's responsibility for the direction of various sections within the office. A position in this class reports directly to a higher-level technical supervisory position.

TYPICAL EXAMPLES OF WORK: (Illustrative Only)

Schedules and makes work assignments for Courtroom security, prisoner transport, service of legal papers and other functions; determines priorities for scheduling, taking into account available staff; determines need for and secures additional staff; gives and gets information about workload, expectations, particular issues and/or concerns with other County offices; plans and conducts on-the-job training activities, determining trainees' success and/or further need for such training; advises staff on treatment for controversial cases, changes in approaches, rules, etc. and/or internal administrative issues; keeps records and submits reports of activities.

Serves Court orders and writs; searches for individuals named in such paper, visiting home and business addresses and talking to family members; locates individuals and serves papers and apprehends those wanted for bench warrants, probation violations and other orders; executes Court orders, injunctions and possessions, taking into custody, transporting individuals from prison to Court, to and from various penal institutions within the state, and for extradition to and from other jurisdictions; drives and/or rides escort in County vehicles to effect such transport; searches individuals being transported for weapons, drugs and other contraband.

Directs security in assigned Courtroom; calls for prisoners; interprets Court orders and sentences; searches individuals entering Courtroom when so ordered; observes Court proceedings particularly individuals and demeanor, to anticipate and control problem situations; guards jurors and judges during course of trial.

Provides security in Protection From Abuse and Domestic Relations sections; provides security and supervision of inmates with the Lehigh County Prison Work Detail Program.

Carries out responsibilities of specific sections of the Sheriff's Office, such as, responsibility for training all deputy sheriffs in the use and maintenance of firearms; ordering clothing and equipment to ensure that deputies are properly uniformed, and equipment in supply and properly maintained; secures lists of prisoners requiring transport from judicial offices and/or penal institutions; makes arrangements with affected agencies and institutions for prisoner preparation for transportation.

Supervises investigation and apprehension of bench warrants and parole violations, and investigations and processing of gun permits.

Performs related work as required.

Required Knowledge, Skills And Abilities

Thorough knowledge of the principles and practices of the criminal and civil justice system, including the rules of procedure.

Thorough knowledge of the goals and objectives of law-enforcement work at the County level.

Thorough knowledge of the methods and techniques commonly employed in law-enforcement security and transport work.

Skill in the use and maintenance of handguns.

Ability to assign and oversee the work of lower-level, law-enforcement personnel.

Ability to determine training needs and develop means to meet them.

Ability to operate a motor vehicle and locate geographical locations, including alternate routes, across the County and State.

Ability to maintain order, including the control of disruptive individuals in a variety of situations.

Ability to keep records and prepare reports from them.

Ability to supervise various sections of the Sheriff's Office.

Acceptable Training And Experience

0406 continued

Education equivalent to completion of the twelfth school grade, supplemented by the successful completion of specialized training of the 160-hour course given by the Deputy Sheriff's Training Academy.

Five (5) to seven (7) years experience in law-enforcement work, two (2) which shall have been at the Deputy Sheriff Sergeant level with satisfactory or above performance evaluations.

Or any equivalent combination of acceptable training or experience which has provided the knowledge, skills and abilities cited above.

Additional Requirements

Possession of a valid motor vehicle operator's license issued by the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania.

Applicant must be able to score a passing grade on the Lehigh County Sheriff's Office Firearms Qualification Course.
